Born on November 9th, 1965, Ryan Murphy was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, into an Irish Catholic household. He attended a Catholic school from where he completed his primary education. Later on, he went to Indianapolis to graduate high school. 

From a very young age, Murphy was well aware that he was gay; however, he admitted to everyone pretty late, revealing that he secretly dated one of the football players in high school. 

After graduating from high school, Murphy went to Indiana University in Bloomington for further studies. There, he studied journalism and thereafter, he got an internship at The Washington Post in 1986.

After interning for The Washington Post, Ryan Murphy worked for numerous publication houses and newspapers in the 80s and 90s. By the end of the 90s, Murphy started exploring his passion for writing. Initially, he was pretty much focused on feature films, and one of his screenplays was even purchased by Steven Spielberg. In the late 90s, Murphy turned his attention towards television and that’s when, in 1999, he co-created a comedy series, “Popular” that ran on The WB for two seasons.

In 2003, Murphy came up with another hit, “Nip/Tuck,” that made him nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for the first time. The series ran for six seasons and many of the episodes were, in fact, directed by Ryan Murphy. In 2006, he wrote and directed his first feature film called, “Running with Scissors.” 

In 2009, Murphy created another hit comedy-drama series, “Glee” that received great sets of positive reviews from the critics and finally made Murphy win his first Primetime Emmy Award. With such big hits, Murphy directed the popular film, “Eat, Pray, Love,” which made a box office collection of over $200 million. 

After the success of “American Horror Story ” in 2011, Murphy hit a speed bump with his series, called “The New Normal” that came out in 2012, but was canceled after one season.
